Foreign Bodies in ENT and When They Need Medical Removal

Foreign bodies in ENT are objects that become lodged in the ear, nose, throat, or related passages. The problem is particularly common among young children, although adults can also experience it through accidents, food-related incidents, occupational exposure, or attempts to clean the ears.

Objects found in the ear may include beads, small toy parts, cotton fragments, insects, or pieces of paper. Nasal foreign bodies in children can include food particles, seeds, foam, beads, and other small objects. In the throat, bones or food particles may occasionally become stuck and require medical assessment.

Symptoms vary according to the location. An object in the ear may cause pain, hearing reduction, discharge, bleeding, or a blocked sensation. A nasal foreign body can lead to obstruction, irritation, bleeding, or foul-smelling discharge from one side of the nose. A foreign body in the throat may cause discomfort while swallowing, persistent pricking sensation, coughing, or difficulty swallowing.

Certain situations need particularly prompt attention. Button batteries can cause significant tissue injury and require urgent medical removal, especially when lodged in the nose, ear, or oesophagus. Magnets and objects causing breathing difficulty also require immediate assessment.

Repeated attempts to remove an object at home can sometimes push it deeper or injure surrounding tissue. Cotton buds, pins, tweezers, matchsticks, or similar instruments should not be inserted blindly into the ear or nose. The safest removal technique depends on the object's size, shape, location, material, and how firmly it is lodged.

An ENT doctor may use illumination, magnification, suction, forceps, hooks, or other appropriate instruments after examining the affected area. In some situations, particularly with young children who cannot remain still or with deeply impacted objects, removal may require additional measures in a controlled medical setting.

For families in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, preventing foreign-body incidents is especially important where toddlers have access to small household objects. Useful precautions include keeping batteries, magnets, beads, small toy components, seeds, and sharp objects out of children's reach. Toys should also be checked for loose or detachable components.

Dr. Navalakhe ENT Clinic evaluates foreign bodies in ENT according to their location, symptoms, and clinical urgency. Assessment is particularly important when an object cannot be seen clearly, previous removal attempts have failed, or pain, bleeding, discharge, swallowing difficulty, or breathing symptoms are present.

Recognising the problem early and avoiding repeated home manipulation can reduce the possibility of local injury and make appropriate removal more straightforward.
